Antioxidants are substances that reduce oxidative stress by inhibiting oxidation. Oxidation is the process by which waste substances are generated, leading to the production of free radicals. To correct this, antioxidants such as Glutathione and CoQ10 are produced by the body. However, they are not always able to combat the creation of free radicals as effectively as they should – a phenomenon prevalent in older people. This makes it necessary to get antioxidants from other sources.
Can Oxygen be Dangerous?
It might sound absurd reading that oxygen may be dangerous, given how synonymous the compound is to existence on this earth. First of all, it is essential to understand that oxygen is one of the most reactive compounds ever because of its atomic structure. An atom of oxygen has six electrons in its outermost shell, so it needs only two electrons from elsewhere to remain stable, making it easily and readily reactive to other elements like hydrogen.
In many of the body’s chemical reactions, oxygen is produced as a by-product, and because it is highly reactive in nature, it readily interacts with other elements within the body resulting in the production of what is known as free radicals. Free radicals are destructive and cause damage to cells by robbing electrons from other proteins. This causes other cells to become destabilized, and the cycle goes on and on and on, causing damage to the body. To control the damage, the body has little choice but to release antioxidants.
How helpful are Antioxidants?
Antioxidants are very stable and work by binding to free radicals to neutralize them and bring an end to the damage they are causing. Most conditions like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s occur as a result of free radicals. This is because as we grow older, the body cannot produce as much antioxidants as it should. This gives leeway to free radicals to cause damage to the body as they cannot be neutralized by the body’s antioxidants.
CBD as an Antioxidant
For a long time, vitamins C & E have been touted to be some of the most potent antioxidants known to man. People have also turned to other supplements for antioxidants in addition to foods rich in vitamins C & E. Recent findings, however, indicate that CBD is one of the richest sources of antioxidants.
How true is this?
Well, CBD’s chemical structure has a free oxygen atom. This free oxygen atom can be donated to free radicals to neutralize them. This is what makes CBD an excellent antioxidant. CBD has also been found to have neuroprotective properties so it can guard the body against neurodegenerative diseases.
There have been studies conducted on the antioxidant properties of CBD. In one such study, which was conducted on rats, it was found that CBD can reduce hydro-peroxide toxicity in neurons. Another study also revealed that CBD’s antioxidant properties are more potent than those of Vitamins C & E by 30% to 50%.
Without antioxidants, the body is left unguarded against free radicals that can cause damage. Although some foods are rich vitamin C & E, CBD is more abundant in antioxidants than most conventional sources.
