    What is Diabetes?

    Diabetes occurs when the body cannot make sufficient amount of insulin, resulting in elevated blood sugar. There is Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

    Gestational diabetes is a third form of diabetes occurring during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes disappears after a baby is born, but can be a predictor of type 2 diabetes later in life.

    Type 1

    Unlike type 2, type 1 diabetes is unpreventable. Type 1 occurs when a person’s immune system attacks their insulin-producing pancreas cells. Previously known as “juvenile diabetes,” type 1 can happen in both children and adults.
